This week I am joined by my long time songwriting collaborator Ian Erving. Ian wrote most of The ‘Murder In The Rain’ album with me in the 1980’s. We discuss songwriting and the writers who have inspired us over the years. We reminisce about bands we have been in and people we have worked with; it certainly brought some happy memories back. I also explore a stunning piece of work by Henry Mancini and Johnny Mercer.
Here are the links to Audrey Hepburn’s version of Mancini/Mercer’s ‘Moon River’, that is discussed in the Podcast.

This week I explore two pieces of work from legendary songwriters: Hoagy Carmichael and Harry Nillson. I also explore the original recording of German Nights recorded in 1987. Thank you for the lovely comments people have sent on Facebook regarding last weeks Pilot Episode. I have really enjoyed putting these together and will keep digging through the archives and seeing what else I can uncover. As lockdown is easing, I am hoping to coerce some friends to chat with me over the next few weeks and add an extra dimension to the conversation.

I have now recorded Episode 1 – The Pilot of The David Mackin Podcast. Here I discuss two pieces of work from two of my favourite songwriters: Brian Wilson and Gerry Rafferty. I have also dusted down some 4 track recordings of some of the songs from The Murder In The Rain Album as well as a rehearsal tape of The Sleeping City. I am looking at adding this series to Spotify, Apple and Amazon as it develops. Here is the link to the episode. Your feedback will be greatly appreciated.
Here are the links to Gerry Rafferty’s ‘Look Over The Hill And Far Away’ and Brian Wilson’s ‘Til I Die’ songs that are discussed in the Podcast.

I can recommend a fabulous podcast called Sodajerker On Songwriting where two lads from Liverpool, Simon and Brian, have interviewed most of the worlds greatest songwriters. These lads are certainly not messing about. To date, they have interviewed legends such as Paul McCartney, Paul Simon, Sting, Mike Stoller, Neil Sedaka, KT Tunstall, Jeff Lynne, Paddy McAloon, Trevor Horn and Elvis Costello…….and I am only scratching the surface with this short list. It is well worth a listen. Click on the image to visit the Spotify page.
Another fabulous podcast is Sail On ( A Beach Boys Podcast) where a tribute band from the USA have detailed some fantastic discussions on everything related to The Beach Boys. Fascinating conversations about Phil Spector, The Wrecking Crew and Brian Wilson’s amazing songwriting are covered with great research and intelligent opinions. A fantastic podcast that I strongly recommend.
If anybody out there would like to get involved with any of the conversations or has any suggestions on what we can discuss, please drop me a message. I will start recording from Monday 20th April 2020.
